What is endodontic treatment?
Endodontic treatment is also commonly known as root canal treatment, which is a dental procedure in which a dentist treats a tooth which has been infected.
Although it is sometimes considered a procedure to be avoided, it can help in saving a tooth from being removed completely from the mouth of one of our patients. The relief from the pain of an infected tooth far outweighs any discomfort during treatment.
When are you in need of a root canal treatment?
The infection can be caused in a number of ways, such as a leaky filling (when a filling is not secured correctly or has become loose) tooth decay or if your teeth have been damaged as a result of a fall or another type of trauma or injury.
If you have an infection in your tooth, our dentist in St Albans will take an X-ray of your teeth and mouth to see if the dental pulp of your tooth has been damaged by the bacterial infection. If you are experiencing pain when you are eating, biting or chewing, or when you are drinking either a hot or a cold drink, it may be possible that you are dealing with a pulp infection.
If the X-ray confirms this, it will be necessary to treat the infection in the root canal as quickly as possible. In some cases you may experience further symptoms such as pus oozing from the affected tooth, swelling of either the gum near the affected tooth or in your face, and even the infected tooth becoming a darker colour. However, if treatment is pursued with our practice promptly we can quickly resolve the problem and relieve discomfort, whilst also saving your tooth.
