All about facial aesthetics with our dentist

facial-aesthetics

Facial aesthetics is a non-surgical cosmetic procedure carried out to revitalise your appearance by reducing lines and wrinkles on your face or by enhancing certain facial features. Here at UK Dental Specialists, we are proud to offer a wide range of facial aesthetics services carried out by our highly qualified dentist in St Albans.

Considering facial aesthetics?

You may be considering facial aesthetics for several different reasons; as you age, your skin begins to lose its elasticity causing it to look dull and dry. Thankfully, procedures our dentist in St Albans offers, such as Botox, offer a solution to this by relaxing the muscles in your face and smoothing out wrinkles and lines. It may also be that you want to enhance certain features on your face or make them appear more symmetrical; in this case, our dentist in St Albans would recommend dermal filler, which can target areas of your face such as your nose, cheeks, jawline, tear troughs, chin and lips.

Botox treatment

Botox injections contain a toxin called botulinum, which works to block certain chemical signals from the nerves that cause the muscles in your face to contract. This causes the facial muscles to relax, thus getting rid of any frown lines and wrinkles. Botox can be carried out on multiple areas of the body, including the face, palms of your hands or even your feet. It is often a comfortable procedure; however, you can opt to have your skin numbed beforehand. The number of shots required usually depends on the size of the treatment area, and your dentist will sometimes use an ultrasound to guide the needle into the correct region. It is advised to not rub or massage the treated area for 24 hours and to not lie down for two to four hours after receiving the Botox shots to prevent the toxin from spreading to an area where you do not require it. The results begin to appear within one to three days of receiving the treatment and usually last for up to four months; therefore, require follow-up injections which are spaced around three to four months apart.

Dermal filler

Most dermal fillers in the UK contain a natural substance called hyaluronic acid which is injected into your face to fill in lines and wrinkles or enhance specific features of your face by adding volume. While dermal fillers are not permanent, their effects can last for up to a year depending on the area that has been treated. The process lasts around 15 to 20 minutes and involves the dentist first applying a local anaesthetic cream to the area to be treated. They will then wait for a few minutes until your lips feel numb and then begin injecting the filler around the treatment area, which will then be massaged to ensure the filler has been spread evenly. It is important to note that while getting dermal fillers is not painful, it can be uncomfortable, and there will be swelling after the treatment is complete; however, this resolves itself within the first 24 hours.
